Tips for an Inexpensive Wedding
First you have to figure out how much money you can spend. If you don't
have a good idea about that you will almost always spend too much. After you know how much you can spend it's time to make a budget. Most
weddings include ceremony and reception sites, food, cake, drinks,
officiants, photographers, clothing, guest entertainment, travel, etc.
Decide which things are most important to you and your partner before
cutting any corners. Have you always dreamed of a wedding on the beach
or a big jazz band at the reception? Pick the things that you are
willing to spend more on so that you can cut back in other areas. Deciding how many people to invite is very important. The more people
you invite the more money it will cost, period. Does your third grade
teacher who you haven't seen in a decade (but who would love to know
you tied the knot) really need to be there? If the location isn't that important to you, there are several other
options for reducing cost. You can skip the fancy hotel and go with a
banquet hall or even less expensive have it at home/outdoors. Food is one of the biggest expenses at a wedding reception. If caviar
and lobster aren't in your budget, don't worry you can still have a
classy party. Many caterers offer less expensive options like an
appetizer bar instead of a served meal. If your reception site does not
require you to use their catering service, then you can always bring in
the food yourself (or have aunt Ida do it) to save a bundle. Many
people these days are choosing non-traditional times for their weddings
to save money. If you don't have your reception at dinner time, people
won't expect a meal. On the same token as the meal, the cost of the wedding cake can be a
factor. If you want the 5-tiered strawberry waterfall cake it's going
to cost you more. If cake worthy of a news paper article isn't
required, then get something smaller/simpler like a sheet cake. Just
keep in mind that professionals so-called serving sizes are often
vastly smaller than what you might expect. A skilled friend or family
member can do it. Many people are even saving money by having tiers of
cupcakes instead of a traditional cake. To save money on invitations the biggest cost saver is to forget the
word "wedding." You can customize invitations on many websites and save
a ton if you don't choose one of the pre-made wedding options. You
could also save on postage by making your RSVP a postcard instead of a
traditional letter which costs ten cents instead of 42+. To save even
more money try a seal-and-send option that way there is no cost for an
envelope (they look like a plus sign and you just print the text inside
and fold them before mailing). If you have internet savvy friends you
could even have them RSVP online with sites like e-vite. If a traditional white wedding gown is a must, then try to buy it
during the off season (not the summer) to find a deal. If you are less
traditional or want an informal wedding, you can find some real
bargains in January on holiday dresses or even clearance bridesmaid
dresses. Other cost cutting tips include: not hiring a professional to cut and
serve the cake, using an iPod instead of a live band, making
centerpieces and 'favors' yourself, making the flower arrangements
yourself from silk flowers, or having a skilled friend take the photos.
