Making your Wedding Day Music Solid Gold
“Music is by far the most important part of a wedding,” says Sarah
Dryden, a bridal boutique owner and wedding consultant. “Do not
underestimate the importance of music. You will be forgiven for so-so
food, but not for bad music.” Couples consider their wedding a success if their guests have a good
time and having great music will ensure that they will. Think about
your guests and their taste, not just your own. Consider a genre or mix
that is neutral and transcends age like Motown or classic country.
Dryden stresses to make music a priority; do your research and prep
work ahead of time and the music on the big day will be solid gold. The Cocktail Reception After the ceremony there is typically an hour-long cocktail reception
during which music is played while your guests are mingling and making
introductions. The current trend is to hire an instrumental ensemble
like a string quartet or even a steel drum band. Whatever direction you
go in, keep in mind that the music should not be overbearing. The After Dinner Music Before the dinner plates are even cleared, the party portion should be
getting underway… that is, after the first dance. Traditionally couples
choose a song for the first dance that reflects their personal taste.
Not as traditionally, some couples stage a choreographed dance, perhaps
to a favorite hip-hop or pop song and surprise their guests with a
performance. The iPod While the iPod is the most affordable, it is also the most labor
intensive. Unless you are a music fiend you probably do not have all
the music you want at your finger tips. Start researching and
collecting earlier. Borrow music from friends; keep an open mind; and
take suggestions. Be considerate of the crowd. Your 80 year-old
grandmother might not appreciate hearing the Wu-Tang Clan. If your
location doesn’t have a time limit you could even make an “after party”
playlist. Remember you will still need a PA system to play the music and you will
still need an announcer. A band or DJ doesn’t just play music at a
wedding, they are also the MC and like a wedding coordinator they can
orchestrate the flow of the entire night. This means that if you don’t
hire a band or DJ you will need to designate someone to be MC. The Band Live music is always a party starter. Typically the band will start
playing after dinner. Bands usually have their own ideas about what
works. They want people to dance and know how to push the right buttons
to make that happen. You can use the Internet to find bands that play
the type of music you like and find bands that specialize in specific
genres like Motown, country, or rock. There are even entire websites
dedicated to helping you book bands for special events. Once you find a
band you like, try to attend a gig of theirs before you book them. This
will save you a lot of anxiety about the big day. The DJ Sometimes you have to compromise between what you want to hear and what
will get your guests dancing—but you should never have to compromise
between what a DJ wants to hear versus what you want to hear. Make sure
you lay out specific guidelines for the type of music you want played.
Some couples even give their DJs “do not play lists” for songs like
“YMCA” or “The Electric Slide”. If this is not your style, the DJ
should know that, otherwise they might use these outdated numbers as
old faithful party starters.
